Sheena Iyengar: The art of choosing
Choice is an American right and custom. It is a personal freedom to express one's personality; however, choice is also heavily influenced by those surrounding an individual. This relates to The Great Gatsby because Nick constantly has to choose between Gatsby and his other "friends" such as the Buchanan's and Jordan Baker. He thinks he is in control of his choices but they are influenced by all of those around him; Nick chooses to be friends with Gatsby because he is the only real person he knows even if he is hiding an entire life. He chooses not to be friends with Tom and Daisy Buchanan because of how problematic they are.
