In Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, Willy Loman, a poor salesman on the edge of being penniless, wants more to earn his own wealth more than anything. He became a salesman because he thought that he was likable. When he figures out that he is wrong, it is too late for him to change jobs so he dies penniless.
